Cyprus is currently experiencing its coldest weather in two years, with temperatures falling well below normal and frost in the mountainous regions.
Snowfall was reported in mountainous areas and regions above 400 meters. At altitudes above 500 meters, light snowfall has accumulated since Wednesday night due to precipitation from the sea effect.
The temperature is expected to fall 3 to 6 degrees Celsius below the seasonal average, reaching 11 to 13 degrees inland, 13 to 15 degrees on the coast and -1 degree on the Chionistra mountain peak, where frost prevails.
The authorities have issued a yellow warning for this evening due to particularly low temperatures in mountain and low mountain regions. The conditions are expected to continue until Friday and then ease somewhat on Saturday.
The weather system, caused by an isolated low-pressure area in the middle troposphere and extremely cold air masses, is forecast to continue to affect the region until early next week. Local rain and snow at higher elevations are expected on Sunday.
