The government of Cyprus wants to take stronger action against unlicensed taxi rides and illegal passenger transport. The House of Representatives' Transport Committee discussed two new bills that provide for tougher penalties for violations.
The drafts come from Marinos Mousiouttas (DIPA) and are primarily aimed at so-called "pirate taxis" – vehicles that transport passengers without a valid license.
Currently, the fine is 85 euros, but in the future the fines are to increase significantly in order to achieve more deterrence.

A planned increase for vehicles without license plates was reduced from 500 to 400 euros after consultation with the responsible ministries in order to keep the measure proportionate.
Another provision that was supposed to impose a fine of 100 euros on passengers in illegal taxis is currently being revised.

MEP Demetris Demetriou (DISY) suggested that repeat offenders should also be subject to penalty points and the withdrawal of their professional license.
