When small turtles suddenly emerge from the sand

During the summer months, young sea turtles hatch on various beaches in Cyprus. After hatching, they leave their nest and usually orient themselves towards the brightest horizon – the sea.

The animals, which are just a few centimetres tall, have to find their way from the nest to the water itself.

However, this is exactly where people can unintentionally become a problem.

Why light can be dangerous for the animals

Especially at night, the young animals depend on their natural orientation. Artificial light from hotels, roads, flashlights or mobile phones can confuse them.

Instead of heading towards the sea, they can walk in the opposite direction.

If you are on a beach at night, you should therefore avoid shining bright light on the sand if possible. Photography with flash should also be avoided.

Even if a small turtle does not seem to run towards the water, you should not bring it there yourself. The natural behavior and orientation of the animals are part of the process.

Anyone who notices an injured turtle or a situation where an animal obviously needs help should contact the relevant authorities or local sea turtle conservation organizations.

For holidaymakers, hatching the little sea turtles can be one of the most extraordinary experiences on the beach. But that is exactly why it is important to observe instead of intervening.

If you keep your distance, avoid light and respect the protected areas, you will help the little turtles to find their way safely into the Mediterranean.

For the baby turtles, the first journey across the sand begins a journey that can make the difference between life and survival just a few minutes after hatching.
