In the early hours of Monday, the British air base RAF Akrotiri in southern Cyprus became the target of a suspected drone attack. According to initial information from military circles, a small drone platform hit the airfield. No injuries were reported, but minor property damage was caused.

The personnel at the base were immediately informed and instructed to stay in place and wait for further instructions. At the same time, the authorities warned of possible follow-up events. Eyewitnesses reported that explosions and sirens were also audible in nearby Limassol.

At the same time, in the early hours of the morning, an Airbus Voyager KC2 tanker aircraft of the Royal Air Force circled south of Cyprus for several hours. Observers see this as an indication of increased military readiness or supporting air operations.

According to unconfirmed reports, the drone used could be a so-called Shahed-136. This disposable attack drone has been used in recent years in both the Middle East conflict and the Ukraine war. There is no official confirmation of this so far.

Contradictory statements on possible missile threats

In connection with the current tensions, there were also contradictory statements about possible missile launches in the direction of Cyprus. While British Defense Secretary John Healey spoke of missiles being fired, Cypriot government officials, including President Nikos Christodoulides and Defense Minister Vasilis Palmas, said there was no evidence of a threat to Cyprus.

The Turkish Cypriot politician Tufan Erhürman also warned against spreading unverified information in the current situation.

RAF Akrotiri is one of the most important British military bases in the eastern Mediterranean. From there, operations in the Middle East are regularly supported. Because of this strategic role, the base is considered a potential target for asymmetric attacks in times of regional tensions.
