British tourist befriends octopus in Cypriot waters
A tourist from Blackburn has made an unusual friendship in Cyprus – with a small octopus, which he now visits every day on the seabed.
As the Lancashire Telegraph reports, 28-year-old Matthew Hyatt first met the animal about a week ago during a dive at an old shipwreck off the coast of Limassol.
When he lifted a stone there, the octopus came out. Matthew carefully held out his hand – and the animal curiously stretched out one of its tentacles to touch him.
Since that moment, Matthew has returned to the same place every day. Each time, the octopus reappears – sometimes from the wreck, sometimes from the open sea.
Once they even spent almost an hour together under water. The octopus approached him, sat on his hand and let himself be carried away by the current, before finally retreating back into his cave and closing it with stones.
"The feeling was indescribable," Matthew says enthusiastically. "When he touched my hand for the first time, it was like a moment from another world – almost like making contact with an alien."
He suspects that the octopus is a male and has four slightly injured arms, but they are healing well.
Once Matthew brought him shrimp, but decided not to repeat it: "I didn't want to disturb his independence – he should continue to hunt himself."
Of his encounter, he says: "I was fascinated by the Netflix documentary 'My Teacher, the Octopus' and had wanted to have such an experience for a long time. I would never have dreamed that it actually happened. It's just wonderful."
