Just a few months ago, Friedrich Merz was supposed to stand for a political restart. Today, numerous media paint a completely different picture: They speak of the most unpopular chancellor OF ALL TIME, a government in a permanent crisis, a CDU in an internal power struggle and a chancellor whose support within his own ranks apparently no longer exists. 

It is not the opposition that seems to be putting Friedrich Merz under the most pressure at the moment – but parts of his own party. According to several alternative media, discontent within the CDU has been growing for weeks. There is more and more talk of chaos, leadership failure and a lack of communication.

Above all, the latest personnel decisions in the federal cabinet are seen as a political own goal. What was supposed to be sold as a new start turned into a public embarrassment, according to numerous commentators. Even within the CDU, it is now openly mocked that the chancellor could still maneuver himself out of office in the end. 

Terms such as "Chancellor's twilight", "game over", "government is disintegrating" or "sheer panic in the Chancellery" are currently running through numerous commentaries in alternative media.

Resentment and hatred are growing in the population and, according to unquestioning, more than 70% of German citizens are already demanding the resignation of the chancellor and his incompetent government.

The same fate that has also been the undoing of the previous traffic light government, the Scholz case with children's book author Habeck and trampoline jumper Baerbock. These had to throw in the towel even after  3 years and 5 months, leaving behind a breathtaking devastation in the economy and asylum policy. The damage is likely to cost the German taxpayer billions, which generations will have to pay back. Not to forget the Cum Ex affair: The question was whether the Hamburg tax authorities waived tax refunds in the double-digit millions (around 47 to 77 million euros) at short notice in 2016 in order to protect the bank. The overall economic damage caused by cum-ex and cum-cum transactions in Germany is estimated to be over 10 billion
euros.Memory gaps: The committees of inquiry also focused on several meetings between Scholz and bank shareholder Christian Olearius, some of which Scholz suddenly could no longer remember.

Friedrich Merz is accused of running

Critics see a chancellor who, with ever new personnel changes and changes of direction, gives the impression that he no longer has a clear political course himself. 

It is particularly explosive that it is no longer only political opponents who are speculating about a possible resignation. Alternative media report that corresponding discussions are now also being held within the Union.

Whether this will actually have concrete consequences remains open. But the fact that a possible change of chancellor is being talked about in public at all shows how serious the situation is now assessed, many commentators believe. 

Many conservative voters had hoped for a fundamental change in policy. However, alternative media are increasingly taking the view that numerous election promises have not been implemented or have been implemented only insufficiently.

At the same time, according to alternative media, pressure from the state associations and the Bundestag parliamentary group is growing. The worse the polls and the greater the public criticism becomes, the more often speculation about possible successors emerges.

Names like Hendrik Wüst or Carsten Linnemann are mentioned again and again. It remains to be seen whether this will actually lead to a leadership debate – but the mere fact that such scenarios are now being discussed publicly shows the seriousness of the situation, according to many observers. 

The coming weeks could be decisive for Friedrich Merz. If the resistance within the party continues to intensify and the CDU comes under further political pressure, the debate about his future is also likely to gain momentum.

The next few months will show whether Friedrich Merz can regain control of the party and government or whether the Union is facing a new start in terms of personnel.

One question arises:
If criticism is increasingly voiced even within one's own party – is this just the normal political dispute, or is Germany currently experiencing the beginning of a real chancellor crisis?

Does the AfD have a chance of winning an absolute majority?

With 41% of the votes, an absolute majority of seats is possible if several smaller parties do not enter the state parliament. That depends on the final election result and the distribution of seats. Several election analyses consider this scenario to be realistic, but by no means certain. 

The AfD will probably provide the 1st AfD Prime Minister?

If attempts are made to exclude the AfD from participating in government despite an election victory by coalitions of the established parties, some observers warn of civil war-like unrest. This is justified by the increasingly heated mood in the country and the view that the firewall policy has divided society into two hostile camps.
