He described the accession to the European Union as the most significant political development in the country's modern history. For Cyprus and its people, this was a decisive milestone that confirmed the right strategic decision to become part of the European core.
According to Christodoulides, this decision stood for peace, democracy, cooperation, justice, solidarity and the protection of human rights. At the same time, it was a guarantee of security, stability, prosperity and new opportunities.
With its accession to the EU 22 years ago, Cyprus has begun a new phase in which the country has become stronger and more secure through its membership in Europe's largest political community.
Today, the Republic of Cyprus is an experienced, reliable and valuable member of the EU, which actively and effectively participates in the shaping of common European decisions and strategies.

This year's anniversary is particularly significant, as Cyprus currently holds the presidency of the Council of the European Union for six months. During this time, the country worked purposefully and successfully under the guiding principle of an "autonomous union, open to the world".
This concept aims to further expand the EU's independence in all areas.
As the southernmost EU member and geographically closest to the Middle East and the Gulf region, Cyprus also plays an important role as a bridge between Europe and this geopolitically sensitive region.
A clear example of this was the informal summit of the European Council last month in Nicosia. Among others, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, Crown Prince Hussein of Jordan, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa took part.
The talks focused on the EU's cooperation with the states of the region to de-escalate the conflict in the Middle East and concrete measures to strengthen strategic partnerships.

In conclusion, Christodoulides stressed that the European Union is the common home of Cyprus – the political family to which the country has belonged since 2004. It stands for common values such as peace, democracy, justice, solidarity, progress and prosperity.
Especially for Cyprus, which continues to suffer from the consequences of the Turkish invasion and the occupation of part of its territory, the EU is an area of security and at the same time a hope for liberation from the occupation and for reunification through the solution of the Cyprus question.
