Nicosia – At first glance, the latest figures from the Cyprus Statistical Office (Cystat) seem positive: The average gross monthly salary in Cyprus rose to 2,601 euros in the first quarter of 2026. Compared to the same period last year, this corresponds to an increase of 3.7 percent. But a closer look at the data shows that this average does not adequately reflect the actual income situation of many employees. (Statistical Offices)
Average and reality are two different things
The average wage is mainly pulled up by very high incomes. This easily gives the impression that most employees earn significantly better than is actually the case.
The official figures show a different picture:
- 33.9 percent of all employees earn less than 1,500 euros gross per month.
- 40.9 percent are between 1,500 and 2,999 euros.
- Only 13.1 percent receive between 3,000 and 4,499 euros.
- Only 5.7 percent earn 6,000 euros or more per month. (Statistical Offices)
This makes it clear that the vast majority of employees are well below the published average salary.
Many employees earn more than 1,200 to 1,500 euros in everyday life (employee or employee)
Anyone who lives in Cyprus knows the reality of many industries. Especially in retail, gastronomy, tourism, sales or in numerous service professions, monthly salaries often range between 1,200 and 1,500 euros gross. This is also in line with the official statistics, according to which around a third of all employees earn less than 1,500 euros. Discussions among employees and jobseekers also confirm that salaries of this magnitude are still common for many professions. (Statistical Offices)
Differences between men and women
There are also still differences between the sexes in terms of income.
In the first quarter of 2026,
- men earned an average of 2,776 euros gross Women
- an average of 2,378 euros gross
women's incomes rose slightly more than men's compared to the previous year, a significant wage gap remains. (Statistical Offices)
Large differences between Cypriots and foreign workers
The differences by nationality are particularly striking.
Among Cypriot employees:
- 27.4 percent earn less than 1,500 euros.
- 45.2 percent are between 1,500 and 2,999 euros.
The situation is different for foreign employees:
- 46.7 percent earn less than 1,500 euros.
- At the same time, 8.5 percent achieve incomes of at least 6,000 euros per month – significantly more than the Cypriots with 4.3 percent. (Statistical Offices)
This shows that foreigners in Cyprus are particularly often represented at the two ends of the income scale: on the one hand, many work in low-paid professions, and on the other hand, international companies and the technology sector attract highly qualified professionals and executives with very high salaries.
Average values should be viewed critically
The current figures make it clear why average values alone often convey a distorted picture. A comparatively small proportion of very well-paid employees raises the average considerably, although a large proportion of employees earn significantly less.
For workers who work in Cyprus on a daily basis, incomes between around €1,200 and €1,800 in many industries often reflect reality rather than the published average of over €2,600. At the same time, the cost of living, especially rents and real estate prices, continues to rise in many regions of the country, putting additional pressure on the disposable income of many households. Conclusion: Although the statistics show rising average wages, they conceal the actual distribution of income. The fact that around one in three employees earns less than 1,500 euros gross per month makes it clear that many people feel little of the positive average figures in everyday life. For the assessment of the economic situation, it is therefore not only the average wage that is decisive, but above all the question of how much money most employees actually have at their disposal at the end of the month.
Important note for EU emigrants from Germany, Austria
If you want to emigrate to Cyprus, you should not only inform yourself about taxes and the climate, but also know the social system.
Unlike in Germany or Austria, the social security system in Cyprus is much leaner. Many state benefits require that contributions to the Cypriot social security system have been paid over a longer period of time or that certain income and residence requirements are met.
Child benefit:
Cyprus does have a child benefit, but it does not automatically apply an entitlement for every immigrant. The benefit is tied to legal requirements such as residence, family circumstances and income limits. In addition, in many cases the benefits are significantly below the level to which families from Germany or Austria are accustomed.
Unemployment:
Unemployment benefits are only paid if the necessary contributions to the Cypriot social security system have been made beforehand and the legal requirements are met. Anyone who has recently immigrated or cannot prove sufficient insurance periods is usually not entitled.
Illness:
Sickness benefit is also linked to social security contribution periods. In many cases, without sufficient insurance periods or ongoing contributions, there is no entitlement to benefits.
Conclusion:
Cyprus offers attractive tax conditions and a high quality of life. However, those who immigrate from German-speaking countries should be aware that the social safety net is much smaller than in Germany or Austria. It is therefore advisable to plan sufficient financial reserves before emigrating and to find out about health insurance, retirement provision and possible entitlements to social benefits at an early stage.
Note: EU citizens do not automatically lose all entitlements from their country of origin by moving to Cyprus. In certain cases, such as pension entitlements or individual family benefits, EU rules on social security coordination apply. However, which benefits are due in individual cases depends on the personal situation and the responsible social security system.
