Crackdown on drug-related crime in Cyprus: 20 years in prison for double deal of cocaine and cannabis
The Cypriot authorities are continuing their consistent course in the fight against drug-related crime. In a clear signal of deterrence, the Larnaca Criminal Court imposed a draconian prison sentence on a drug dealer who possessed and wanted to sell narcotics on a large scale.
A 31-year-old man was sentenced to 20 years in prison on Wednesday. The court found him guilty of possessing more than 15 kilograms of cocaine and almost 95 kilograms of cannabis with the intention of selling.
Court warns of growing threat
In its ruling, the court emphasized that Cyprus has been increasingly confronted with large-scale drug trafficking in recent years. The consequences are serious: an increasing number of addicts as well as serious social and health damage.
The judges described the spread of drugs as
- a social scourge,
- a serious threat to the social fabric ,
- a danger to physical and social well-being ,
- a particular risk for young people
addition, the court referred to the considerable economic and social costs that arise from the supply and consumption of illegal substances. Despite intensive prevention measures, the problem has taken on alarming dimensions worldwide and also locally.
Verdict should have a deterrent effect
The sentence was deliberately chosen strictly in order to achieve a clear deterrent effect. Previous harsh penalties had apparently not brought about the desired curbing of drug trafficking, which is why a clear signal was necessary.
Mitigating circumstances taken into account
Despite the high sentence, the court took into account several mitigating factors:
- young age of the offender
- no previous conviction before arrest
- confession of the crime
- difficult financial situation chronic
- addiction problems as well as gambling addiction
Clear message from the state
The case underlines the Cypriot judiciary's zero-tolerance policy towards organised drug trafficking. While personal circumstances are taken into account, the verdict shows unequivocally: Anyone who deals in drugs on a large scale must expect long prison sentences in Cyprus.
For authorities and society, the fight against drug abuse and organised crime remains a key challenge – especially with regard to the protection of young people and the stability of public health.
