A 30-year-old man was arrested as part of an international police operation in Cyprus. The reason for this is the existence of a website on the darknet, on which images of sexual abuse of minors are distributed, the police said on Wednesday evening.
The operation involved authorities from 38 countries as well as Europol, the European Union's law enforcement agency. The website has since been shut down, over 1,300 suspects have been identified and 79 people have been arrested.
The police said the arrest in Cyprus took place on March 23 after the authorities of another EU member state handed over the man's personal details.
The man is accused of being a paying member of the site.
After the arrest of the man, the police searched his apartment and confiscated two laptops, three mobile phones, a hard drive and a USB memory stick.
