Cypriot actress Marina Makris was honored as one of the ten European Shooting Stars 2025 at the 75th Berlinale International Film Festival in Berlin on Monday evening.

Makris is known for her performances in Cypriot films, including Jiu Jitsu , in which she starred alongside Nicholas Cage, and Adonis Florides ' Africa Star , for which she won Best Actress at the 2024 Cyprus Film Days.

The international jury in Berlin was attracted by her "Mediterranean charisma" and praised Makris as a "brilliant, intelligent actress" with an "intense, profound gaze". They said she possessed a "feminine strength, as if she could carry the world on her shoulders".

The jury consists of Romanian director and screenwriter Radu Muntean, Swedish casting director Pauline Hansson, Swiss producer Amel Soudani, French actress Ludivine Sagnier and Montenegrin journalist and curator Vuk Perović.

Shooting Stars is a programme of the European Film Industry Network (EFP) which annually selects the ten best young actors in Europe , recognises their potential and promotes their careers.

As part of the awards ceremony, the actors took part in a four-day program where they met international media, audiences and film industry professionals and were able to network during the festival.

They received their awards on Monday evening and form a group that for the first time also includes Cyprus and Montenegro.

The 75th Berlinale runs until Sunday and is one of the five most prestigious film festivals in the world. In Cyprus, the Goethe-Institut Cyprus organizes free film screenings of previous Berlinale editions every year in Nicosia and Limassol.
