The plans for the construction of a new city hospital in Polis Chrysochous are increasingly taking shape, 
and Mayor Yiotis Papachristofi expressed his satisfaction with the progress of the ongoing procedures and described the project as a crucial infrastructure project for the entire region.

According to the mayor, the preparations are currently proceeding according to plan. The aim is to lay the foundation stone for the new hospital at the beginning of 2027 and to complete the construction work by the end of 2028. 

Papachristofi expressly thanked Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides for his support and commitment in the implementation of the project.

The new building is intended to provide modern medical care for the residents of Polis Chrysochous and the surrounding communities. The existing hospital dates back to the time of the British colonial administration and, according to the local authorities, no longer meets today's requirements for a modern health care system.

Important steps have also been taken at the national level. The Cypriot cabinet has approved the expropriation of the land on which the new hospital is to be built. President Christodoulides emphasized that clear timelines are crucial to move the project forward consistently.

The corresponding plans were already determined in January at a meeting between representatives of the municipality of Polis Chrysochous, members of parliament from the district of Paphos and the government. According to the current status, the foundation stone is to be laid at the beginning of next year, while the completion of the entire construction project is scheduled for the end of 2028. The investment costs are estimated at around 17 million euros.

The new hospital is to cover an area of about 21,000 square meters. A site opposite the fire brigade of Polis Chrysochous was chosen as the location. The area is spread over three plots, two of which are currently owned by Turkish Cypriot owners.

The construction of the hospital was officially announced last September. At the time, President Christodoulides described the project as a long overdue investment in the region's medical infrastructure and at the same time an important obligation of the state to the local population.

Mayor Papachristofi had also repeatedly pointed out the need for a new hospital. As early as December 2024, he wrote to the then Minister of Health, Michael Damianos, calling for additional support from the central government to ensure adequate medical care for residents.

The need for health services in the region has increased significantly in recent years. Especially during the summer months, the heavy tourism leads to the number of inhabitants more than doubling at times. In addition, with the completion of the new motorway connection between Paphos and Polis Chrysochous, a further increase in demand for medical care is expected in the future.
