Police tighten controls: Numerous fines against e-scooter riders in Paphos
Paphos. The police in the district of Paphos are stepping up their action against violations in the use of e-scooters and other small electric vehicles. During a targeted traffic check along the waterfront and in the port area, 23 violations were detected within a short time. Fines were imposed on 20 people for various violations of the law. Three other drivers were caught using their e-scooters in a prohibited pedestrian zone. In these cases, the vehicles were seized by the police.
The authorities announced that they would further intensify the checks in the coming weeks. The focus is not only on drivers, but also on companies that rent out e-scooters without the necessary permits. In the district of Paphos alone, 132 violations related to e-scooters and other personal mobility devices have already been registered since the beginning of the year.
New legal situation since 2026
With the legislative amendments adopted in spring 2026, Cyprus has amended the regulations for so-called Personal Mobility Devices significantly tightened. The aim is to increase road safety and reduce accidents with pedestrians and other road users. The amendments were published in the Official Gazette of the Republic on 22 April 2026 and have been in force since May.
