Record investments for Paphos: More than 230 million euros flow into roads, infrastructure and major projects
Paphos is facing one of the largest investment programs in its history. In 2026 and 2027, more than 230 million euros are to be invested in a total of 75 large and small infrastructure and development projects. The aim is to expand transport routes, improve the quality of life and strengthen the economic development of the region in the long term.
The extensive investments were confirmed by the Cypriot Minister of Transport, Alexis Vafeades, at a meeting with representatives of the municipalities and local authorities of the Paphos district. At the end of 2025, President Nikos Christodoulides had already announced a comprehensive package of measures for the province at a regional conference. According to the government, this is the largest investment programme that Paphos has received to date.
Paphos–Polis motorway remains a key project
The construction of the new motorway between Paphos and Polis Chrysochous continues to be the focus of the planning. The government is sticking to its previous line of realizing the route as a four-lane expressway. In addition, a connection via Mesogi is planned to further improve the flow of traffic.
Until the new highway is completed, however, the existing connection between Paphos and Polis is to be modernized and expanded. This is intended to eliminate bottlenecks and increase road safety.
Further road construction projects planned
In addition to the motorway, other important transport projects are also to be pushed forward. These include, among others:
- the western bypass of Paphos, the
- completion of the new road link to Paphos Airport following the completion of outstanding environmental procedures,as
- well as major upgrades to the road network in Geroskipou, Peyia and the suburbs of the city of Paphos.
At the same time, further development projects, including the planned marina, are to be implemented.
Where does the money come from?
According to current information, the investment package will not be financed exclusively from EU funds. The vast majority comes from the state budget of the Republic of Cyprus and is part of the government's national investment programme.
However, it can be assumed that individual projects – especially in the areas of transport, environment and infrastructure – will also be co-financed by European Union funding programmes. These include, for example, funds from the European Structural and Cohesion Funds or the EU funding programme Thaleia 2021–2027.
In addition, individual projects could be supported by long-term loans from the European Investment Bank (EIB). However, there is currently no official confirmation that the entire 230 million euros come from EU funding.
Significance for the region
With the investment programme, the government is pursuing the goal of upgrading the infrastructure of western Cyprus and further strengthening the economic development of the region. Improved road connections, modern transport infrastructure and new development projects are expected to benefit residents, businesses and the tourism sector.
Whether all projects can be implemented within the planned time frame will become clear in the coming years. However, one thing is certain: The announced investment volume represents a historic step for the Paphos district and could change the region permanently. ADVERTISING
