Seismic activity in Cyprus – Overview 2025
According to current seismic data collections, hundreds of earthquakes were recorded in and around Cyprus in 2025 – from smaller tremors to several more perceptible quakes with magnitudes above 4.0. In total, several hundred quakes have already been documented this year, including some with noticeable strength. The exact numbers vary depending on the measurement radius and magnitude criterion, but data collections show that several hundred earthquakes up to magnitude 5.3 occurred, including at least two with magnitude above 5 on the Richter scale.
The strongest earthquake in recent months occurred on November 12, 2025, when two earthquakes with values of around 5.2 and 5.3 were registered in the region around **Paphos. These tremors were felt over large parts of the island.
According to the currently available reports, no major damages, injuries or deaths from this event have been confirmed. Authorities and media have so far reported that there have been no significant casualties or severe destruction, although many people have clearly felt the quake and some have left buildings.

Geological Assessment and Observations
The Cyprus Geological Survey indicates that the island is located in a region of natural seismic activity. Every day, a lot of small tremors are registered there, even if most of them are not noticeable. Despite a noticeable increase in activity, there is no reason to panic, according to the experts – such sequences are possible within the framework of regional tectonics. Several minor quakes were recorded in Cyprus on Friday evening, which is part of this ongoing activity. According to the responsible experts, this is within the expected range, even if the frequency currently appears high.
Comparison with historical data
Historically, Cyprus has experienced major earthquakes, but in recent decades there have been no major disasters with large numbers of victims:
- A clear historical comparison is the 1953 earthquake in the Paphos region, in which at least 40 people died and around 100 were injured – thousands of buildings were damaged or destroyed.
- There were also major quakes in earlier centuries, sometimes with severe destruction, but modern events such as 2025 have so far remained without serious consequences.
The strongest registered earthquake in the historical measurement period near Cyprus was in 2022 with a magnitude of 6.6, in which there were only a few injuries and minor damage.
