Over a dozen dogs were removed by animal welfare organizations from an unofficial shelter in Ayioi Trimithias following reports of neglect. However, 17 dogs remain there.

Veterinary officer Yiannis Ioannou said improvements were needed even though no animals were sick or malnourished . The site was previously used as a dog breeding facility and had not been used for nearly a decade.

Savvas Trimithiotis , head of the Ayioi Trimithias community, explained that the owner had allowed the use of the shelter as a dog sanctuary to prevent the killing of stray dogs after the legal 15-day period. Initially, only a small number of dogs were housed, but soon around 20 more were added, which were spotted as a pack in the area around Meniko .

Andreas Kalogirou , mayor of Meniko, reported that the packs were sometimes aggressive . Since the police and local authorities did not initially react, the local council itself caught about 20 dogs and handed them over to the animal shelter.

During an inspection by the veterinary service, over 30 dogs, including several puppies, were found. Many dogs have since been taken in by animal welfare groups , while the search for homes for the remaining animals continues.
