A weak low-pressure system combined with an unstable air mass is bringing unsettled weather conditions to Cyprus, with showers, thunderstorms and strong winds expected across much of the island over the coming days.

On Wednesday, skies will be partly to mostly cloudy at times, with local showers affecting several regions. As temperatures rise through midday and into the afternoon, isolated thunderstorms are likely to develop, particularly over mountainous areas and across the eastern half of the island. In stronger storm cells, hail may also occur.

Winds will blow from the southwest to northwest at moderate to fresh levels, reaching force 4 to 5 on the Beaufort scale. As the day progresses, winds are expected to strengthen further to force 5 to 6, while southern coastal areas may experience gusts up to force 7, creating notably blustery conditions.

Sea conditions will deteriorate from slightly rough to rough as the weather system intensifies.

Daytime temperatures are forecast to reach around 26°C inland, 24°C along the southern and eastern coasts, 21°C in western and northern coastal areas, and approximately 16°C in the higher mountain regions.

During the night, increased cloud cover will continue, with a chance of isolated showers, mainly over western parts of the island. Winds will ease slightly but remain southwesterly to northwesterly at force 3 to 4, occasionally reaching force 5 along exposed coastal areas. The sea will remain rough.

Overnight temperatures are expected to fall to 13°C inland, around 15°C along the coast, and 9°C in the higher mountains.

Looking ahead, unstable weather conditions are set to persist through Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Periods of cloud cover are likely to trigger additional showers and thunderstorms, especially during the afternoon over mountainous areas and the eastern half of Cyprus. Hail remains possible in stronger thunderstorms.

Temperatures will rise slightly on Thursday before gradually declining again by Saturday, remaining below the seasonal average for this time of year.

The unsettled conditions are a reminder that spring weather in Cyprus can still deliver sudden changes, with sunshine quickly giving way to rain, thunder and gusty winds.
