Two balconies collapse in Limassol: Around 20 residents have to leave their apartments
After the collapse of two balconies on an apartment building in Limassol, about 20 residents had to leave their apartments on Monday evening as a precaution. According to information so far, no one was injured, but property damage was caused to a parked vehicle.
The incident took place on Ilisou Street. According to initial findings, a balcony on the fourth floor broke off, tearing down the balcony below on the third floor. Falling debris damaged a car parked nearby.
Authorities initiate evacuation and security measures
The president of the Limassol District Administration Organization (EOA), Giannis Tsoulouftas, explained that engineers were sent to the scene of the accident immediately after the incident. At the same time, contracted specialist companies secured the area to rule out further dangers for residents and passers-by.
The Civil Defence supported the evacuation of the building and organised temporary accommodation for residents who had no alternative place to stay.
On Tuesday morning, structural engineers and engineers carried out further investigations to determine whether the building is habitable again or must remain vacated until necessary repairs have been carried out.
Initial assessments: Supporting structure apparently not affected
According to initial findings, the damage is apparently limited to the balcony constructions. There are no indications of serious impairments of the load-bearing building structure so far.
Tsoulouftas stressed that the apartment building had not been classified as in danger of collapsing by the former municipality of Limassol. However, it was on a list of buildings in need of renovation after previous inspections had found damage to the outer walls and concrete.
The owners had already been asked to hire a structural engineer and have necessary repair measures carried out.
Recommendations apparently not implemented
According to the authorities, the collapse indicates that the recommended repairs may not have been implemented or not fully implemented. At the same time, Tsoulouftas again criticized the lengthy legal procedures with which local authorities have to take action against unsafe buildings.
As an example, he referred to the Seagate apartment building in the tourist area of Germasogeia. There, the district administration is still waiting for a court decision on a requested eviction. The corresponding application was already submitted on 20 May 2026, but has not yet been conclusively dealt with.
The investigations into the incident in Ilisou Street are still ongoing, and experts are now to clarify which specific causes led to the collapse of the balconies and what further safety measures are required.
