Cyprus is safe and launches PR offensive for tourism – air traffic stabilises again

In view of the tense geopolitical situation in the Middle East and some international media reports, the Cypriot government has launched an international communication campaign together with representatives of the tourism industry. The aim is to increase the confidence of travellers and to make it clear that Cyprus continues to be a safe and attractive destination.

At a meeting in the presidential palace chaired by President Nikos Christodoulides, ministers, tourism representatives and industry associations will discuss measures to stabilize the island's image. It was agreed to communicate more strongly internationally that everyday life in Cyprus is normal and that tourism infrastructure and services function without restrictions.

One focus of the strategy is an international PR campaign to be implemented by a large communications agency. It is primarily intended to correct false or exaggerated representations in social media and foreign reports and to convey a realistic picture of the situation.

The background to this is, among other things, short-term flight cancellations and uncertainty among travelers as a result of the developments in the Middle East. In recent weeks, there have therefore been isolated cancellations, especially for the months of March and April, in some cases in the range of around 30 percent. Hoteliers, however, speak of a controllable situation.

At the same time, there are positive signals: new bookings continue to come in, albeit somewhat more slowly than in previous years. Industry experts see this as an initial indication that demand could recover with a stabilization of the regional situation.

There are also signs of a significant easing in air traffic. According to airport operator Hermes Airports, many previously suspended connections have now been resumed. Several major European airlines, including Lufthansa Group airlines, British Airways, easyJet and Transavia, are once again flying regularly to Larnaca and Paphos. In addition, the daily connection between Larnaca and Dubai has also been reactivated.

The government emphasizes that there is currently no reason to panic. The tourism sector, which accounts for around seven percent of Cyprus' economic output, has already proven its resilience several times in the past. At the same time, clear and coordinated communication is intended to ensure that a realistic picture of the situation on the island is once again perceived internationally.

The recent uncertainty among travelers is mainly related to the geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and isolated flight cancellations in recent weeks. For a short time, there were restrictions in air traffic and cancellations of hotel bookings, especially for March and April.

In the meantime, however, there is a clear stabilization. Many international airlines have resumed their connections to Cyprus, so that the airports in Larnaca and Paphos are largely regularly connected again. The island's tourist infrastructure also continues to work without restrictions.

It is important to note that the events that made international headlines were related to military developments in the region and did not affect tourist destinations. Everyday life on the island continues to run normally - hotels, restaurants, beaches and leisure facilities are open to visitors without restrictions.

In addition, most European countries have not issued a travel warning for Cyprus. Authorities and industry representatives therefore emphasize that there is currently no cause for alarm.

Those responsible therefore see cautious optimism for the coming months. Despite individual cancellations, new bookings are already coming in, and with the resumption of many flight connections, the confidence of the international travel markets is slowly rising

again. There are currently still minor restrictions in air traffic, but the situation has stabilized significantly in recent days. The realistic figures show that air traffic is mostly running normally.

Realistic classification:
  • More than 80–90% of flights are taking place again as scheduled.
  • The remaining outages mainly affect regions near the conflict zone in the Middle East.
  • The island's two international airports continue to operate normally and are connected to over 20 countries

In short,
there are still isolated flight cancellations, but air traffic to Cyprus – especially from Europe – is largely back to normal.
