Cyprus' tourism under pressure: Regional escalation hits holiday industry

The Cypriot tourism sector continues to be under considerable pressure. The trigger is not only the weaker demand at the beginning of the season, but above all the uncertainty after the military escalation in the Middle East and the drone attack on the British military base in Akrotiri.

According to the employers' association OEV, the industry is in a difficult situation. President George Pantelides said at the annual general meeting in Nicosia that tourism had entered a phase of increased uncertainty after the drone incident at the British base. Particularly problematic is the industry's strong dependence on early bookings, flight capacities and the feeling of security of international guests.

Cyprus is directly affected because tourism contributes around 14 percent to the country's economic output. This means that cancellations not only affect hotels, but also restaurants, transport, retail, car rental providers, excursion operators and many smaller service providers. In 2025, Cyprus generated tourism revenues of around 3.696 billion euros – a record high.

However, the current figures show a significant cooling. In March 2026, passenger traffic at Larnaca and Paphos airports fell by 15.3 percent compared to the same month last year, according to Hermes Airports. Travel associations also reported that arrivals in March were around 30 percent below expectations.

Ayia Napa, Protaras and the district of Famagusta are particularly affected. There, bookings at the beginning of the season were in some cases around 40 percent below the previous year's level. Some hotels postponed their opening, others reported only occupancy rates of between 25 and 45 percent over Easter.

While the drone attack on RAF Akrotiri in early March resulted in limited property damage and no fatalities, the psychological impact on the travel market was significant. Reuters reported that a drone hit the British base and more drones were intercepted.

Not only Cyprus is affected. According to Reuters, the effects of the escalation between the US, Israel and Iran also affected Greece and Turkey, while tour operators observed a shift in demand towards the western Mediterranean – such as Spain, Italy or Portugal.

Egypt, the Gulf States and cruise destinations such as Abu Dhabi and Doha were also affected. The travel group TUI put the burden of the Iran war at around 40 million euros so far, including repatriation of almost 12,000 guests and employees as well as disruptions in regions such as Turkey, Cyprus and Egypt.

For Cyprus, the exact damage cannot yet be definitively quantified. However, a rough approximation shows the order of magnitude: In March 2025, tourism revenues were around 129 million euros, in April 2025 around 304 million euros. If March and April 2026 are effectively 30 to 40 percent below potential due to cancellations and weaker demand, the calculated loss of revenue is roughly in the range of 130 to 170 million euros. This is not an official amount of damage, but a conservative estimate based on available comparative data.

The government is trying to counteract this. Several countries – including France, Denmark, Italy, Croatia, the Netherlands, Hungary, Poland, Sweden and Bulgaria – have eased or adjusted their travel advice after talks with Nicosia. The aim is to present Cyprus more clearly as a stable and safe travel destination again.

In addition, a support program for hotels has been activated. A subsidy of 30 percent of the monthly salaries per employee, capped at 1,324 euros, is planned, provided either a decline in sales of more than 40 percent compared to April 2025 or an occupancy rate below 60 percent.

Industry representatives are now calling for a coordinated international communication campaign, targeted incentives for airlines and clear travel information. The decisive factor will be whether it is possible to regain lost confidence before the main season.

Because one thing is clear: Cyprus does not have a classic tourism problem. Cyprus has a perception problem. And in tourism, perception often decides faster than reality.
