🌋 Red alert: Indonesia's Semeru volcano erupted
The Semeru volcano in Indonesia has erupted, releasing fast-flowing pyroclastic flows. The Indonesian volcanology authority has then raised the alert level for the highest mountain on the island of Java to the highest level.
Extent of the eruption
The eruption began on Wednesday afternoon (around 16:00 local time):
- The volcano spewed ash clouds into the sky that were up to 5.6 kilometers high.
- The authorities warned residents not to keep a distance of 2.5 kilometers from the danger zone.
- The pyroclastic flows that flowed from the summit had a range of up to seven kilometers.
Background and Risk
Mount Semeru, also known as Mahameru, is Indonesia's highest peak at 3,676 meters. It is located in a densely populated region of Java and belongs to the Pacific "Ring of Fire", a seismically active belt where volcanic eruptions and earthquakes are common.
Indonesia is home to almost 130 active volcanoes – more than any other country. Semeru is one of the most monitored volcanoes, as its activity poses a constant threat to the surrounding communities, transport routes and air traffic. A deadly outbreak in 2021 killed 62 people when villages were buried under hot ash.
