Germany Trend: AfD ahead of CDU / In Saxony, 41% would vote for AfD

The political balance of power in Germany continues to move: According to the current ARD Deutschlandtrend, the AfD is now ahead of the Union for the first time. In the latest Sunday question, the party reaches 27 percent, gaining two percentage points. The CDU and CSU, on the other hand, lose two points and together only come to 24 percent.

The SPD remains unchanged at 12 percent and cannot currently benefit from the losses of the CDU/CSU. The Greens improve slightly to 15 percent, while the Left Party remains at 10 percent. The Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) is stagnating at 3 percent. The FDP can make slight gains and reaches 4 percent. Other parties together come to 5 percent.

The survey was conducted between May 4 and 6, 2026. A total of 1,303 eligible voters in Germany took part in the survey – both by telephone and online. According to ARD, the statistical margin of error is about two to three percentage points.

The AfD has reached a new high in Saxony-Anhalt. According to the current "Saxony-Anhalt TREND" survey by MDR, which is available MFRadio.de, 41 percent of eligible voters would vote for the party if state elections were held next Sunday. This is two percentage points more than in September 2025 - and the highest value ever measured for the state by the infratest dimap institute.

The CDU falls back to 26 percent (minus one), the Left Party comes to 12 percent (minus one). The SPD remains at seven percent, the Greens and BSW are at four percent each, other parties at six percent.

At the same time, the political debate in Germany continues to intensify. In an interview with NIUS, AfD leader Alice Weidel warned of a possible economic decline and spoke of the danger of national bankruptcy. At the same time, CDU General Secretary Carsten Linnemann expressed concerns about a possible massive loss of membership within the Union. According to media reports, the party could lose up to 50,000 members.

Other topics outside of party politics are also causing discussions nationwide. In Wuppertal, a so-called "dead racer" was sentenced to life imprisonment. In addition, criticism of the sluggish digitization in Germany is growing. Experts and business representatives are increasingly warning that the country is continuing to lose ground internationally in key future technologies.
