Outrage in Turkey after alleged incident at the Atatürk monument – debate about respect, fan behaviour and images

Two suspected German football fans were arrested after the UEFA Europa League final in Istanbul after significant outrage on social media over misconduct at an Ataturk monument. The persons concerned are accused of urinating on the monument of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk in the vicinity of the Beşiktaş Stadium.
The incident and the
  • arrests The accused: According to reports, they are two supporters from Germany who traveled with them.
  • The crime: The men are said to have desecrated the monument to the Turkish founder near the arena while drunk.
  • The consequences: After the dissemination of image and video material on the Internet, local security forces reacted quickly and arrested the suspects. In Turkey, insulting or denigrating the memory of Atatürk is a punishable offence.

Images circulated on social media caused outrage. The footage is said to show 2 people in the vicinity of SC Freiburg fans near an Atatürk monument. An independent official confirmation of the complete facts of the case was not yet publicly available at the time of the report. The reactions in Turkey and also among German football fans were nevertheless clearly critical and the incident has caused heated discussions in Turkey and also in Germany. The pictures and videos spread very quickly on social networks, apparently showing SC Freiburg supporters urinating in the immediate vicinity of a monument to Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.

The recordings caused strong reactions within a few hours, especially in Turkey. Numerous users described the behavior as disrespectful and demanded consequences against the people involved. The background to the special sensitivity: Atatürk is considered the founder of modern Turkey and still has a central symbolic significance for the identity, history and self-image of the country.

The incident is said to have occurred around the fan gatherings before the Europa League final. According to media reports, around 11,000 SC Freiburg supporters travelled to Istanbul to accompany the club to its first major European final.

Critical voices also came from Germany. Several Freiburg supporters publicly distanced themselves from the behaviour and emphasised that individual persons should not be representative of the entire fan community. In social media, the alleged participants were criticized, some of them clearly, and their behavior was condemned.

At the same time, a second debate arose online: Some users expressed doubts about the authenticity or the complete context of individual images that were distributed. It was claimed that at least one version of the recordings had been edited and that relevant areas of the image could be missing. A conclusive, independent classification of individual circulating recordings was not publicly available at the time of the discussions.

The incident shows once again how quickly individual actions in international sport can take on political and social significance. Especially in places with historical or national symbolic power, such situations are often perceived far beyond the actual sporting event.

For many fans, sporting events are seen as an encounter between cultures. The reaction of many voices – both in Turkey and among German football supporters – was correspondingly clear, calling for respect for the host country, history and public places.

In sporting terms, the evening ended with a clear result: Aston Villa won 3-0 and thus won the first major European title in 44 years.

Editor's opinion:
If the allegations are confirmed and the reports are true, such behavior is simply an absolute no-go. Such actions have no place in sport and do not cast a good light on the people affected - regardless of which club they belong to.
Especially in German football, respect, consideration and appropriate behaviour are often rightly demanded from guests and people from other countries. This makes it all the more important to adhere to these standards ourselves and to set a good example.
Individuals do not automatically represent all fans – nevertheless, such images damage the reputation of one's own supporters and the idea of fair and respectful cooperation in international sport.
