Erlangen Bergkirchweih: Why some citizens have the impression that politics is intervening more and more deeply in everyday life

Erlangen and the ban song debate – More than just music?
A decision of the city council of CSU, Left and SPD.

The alliance decided at that time that music with discriminatory content is not allowed?
The discussion about the Erlangen Bergkirchweih is currently attracting attention far beyond Bavaria.
The trigger was public notices and recommendations in the context of the festival not to look at certain party and cult songs or only critically. Among other things, well-known titles such as "Layla", "Skandal im Sperrbezirk", "Joana", "Donaulied", "Geh mal Bier hol'n", "20 Centimetres" as well as other pieces that have been played at folk festivals for years were mentioned.
This was justified by the desire to pay attention to content that could be perceived as sexist or no longer up to date.
The reactions to this were clearly different.

Erlanger Bergkirchweih: Song list causes controversy - debate far beyond the festival

The Erlanger Bergkirchweih - one of the most traditional and largest folk festivals in Bavaria - will make headlines in 2026 not only because of beer and a festive atmosphere, but also because of a discussion about music, culture and the role of public authorities.
The trigger was a letter to landlords and bands in the context of the event. In it, it was recommended to refrain from certain songs that could convey problematic content from the point of view of the city's equality office - especially because of accusations of sexism or misogynistic statements. The city emphasizes that this is not a legal prohibited list, but a recommendation and awareness-raising.
Among
the publicly mentioned songs are:
  • Layla DJ Robin & Schürze (2022)
  • Nein heißt ja G.G. Anderson (2000)
  • Donaulied Volkslied, various versions: including Mickie Krause (2012)
  • Baby Bell Breitner (2025)
  • Joana (du geile Sau) Peter Wackel (2007)
  • Olé, wir fahr'n in' Puff nach Barcelona 3 Besoffskis, Cover: Mickie Krause (1975; 1999)
  • 20 Centimeters Mirja Boes (2000)
  • Die Glöcknerin von Dingolfing Dorfrocker (2015)
  • Skandal im Sperrbezirk Spider Murphy Gang (1981)
  • Geh mal Bier hol'n Mickie Krause (2014)
  • Deine Freundin SDP (2015))
  • 10 naked hairdressers Mickie Krause (1999)
  • Innkeepers ignore the list, "Joana" and other songs are played
  • as well as several other well-known party and mood titles from the folk festival area, including several songs from the environment of Mallorca star Mickie Krause.

Particularly caused discussion was the fact that with "Skandal im Sperrbezirk" by Spider Murphy Gang a decades-old cult song is also affected, which for many people is an integral part of Bavarian party culture. Critics publicly described the procedure as music censorship or as a symbol of increasing influence on culture and everyday life. Supporters of the procedure, on the other hand, argue that public events should be aware of their impact and content.

From a socio-critical perspective, some citizens see this development as more than just a discussion about music.
They ask the question of whether politics and public institutions are increasingly supporting areas that were previously more closely linked to social interaction – such as language, humour, traditions or cultural forms of expression.

Where does the political recommendation end – and where does cultural control and prohibition ala communism begin from the point of view of some people?
Regardless of the political assessment, the discussion shows one thing above all:
music in Germany has long since ceased to be just entertainment – but for many people it is also an expression of freedom, tradition and social identity.

Opinion: Why some citizens have the impression that politics is intervening

more and more deeply in everyday life
The discussion about song recommendations at folk festivals may seem small at first glance.

A few songs. A few recommendations. A few headlines.
But for some people, there is something much bigger behind it.
They have the feeling that politics and public institutions are increasingly touching on areas that were previously understood as personal or social freedoms.
  • Not just music.
  • But also language.
  • Humor.
  • Traditions.
  • Identity issues.
  • Gender Images.
  • Political stance.

And sometimes even the way social discussions are conducted.

This perception gives rise to the concern that social developments no longer arise organically, but are more strongly accompanied, classified or morally evaluated.

For example, the majority of citizens feel:
  • that language is becoming more and more standardized
  • , that certain jokes or forms of humor are more quickly criticized by society
  • ,
  • that cultural traditions are questioned more often
  • , that debates about gender, identity and social roles have become very present
  • ,
  • that public institutions are more likely to formulate
  • social modelsthat political positions are sometimes more quickly classified into categories such as "contemporary" or "not contemporary"
From this perspective, some people do not have the feeling of classic censorship.
But something else:

the feeling that social pressure is increasing.

That it is no longer just laws that influence – but expectations.
  • Recommendations.
  • standards.
  • Public classification.

Critics sometimes describe this feeling in historical or ideological terms – not as an equation, but as a warning against the impression that social diversity in thinking could become smaller.

Proponents of the same developments, on the other hand, see it as modernization, consideration and social progress.

This is precisely where the conflict of our time lies.

Not in the fact that people have different opinions.
But in the fact that many people perceive differently how much influence politics should have on culture and everyday life.

The real question is:

"Does this debate really arise from a broad social need – or is it mainly carried into the public sphere by small, politically strongly idiologically influenced groups and presented there as a general social consensus?"

If this continues to develop, the only option is to stay away from such events or to bring about political change in the country.
