Las Vegas – Almost 30 years after the death of legendary rapper Tupac Shakur, an important decision has been made in what is probably the most famous unsolved murder case in hip-hop history. A jury in Las Vegas found former gang leader Duane "Keffe D" Davis guilty of the murder of Tupac Shakur on August 31, 2026.

Davis, now 63, was convicted of first-degree murder using a lethal weapon. The jury deliberated less than three hours before announcing its verdict. Davis announced after the guilty verdict that he would appeal the decision.

The crime was almost 30 years ago

Tupac Shakur was hit from a passing vehicle in a shooting in Las Vegas on September 7, 1996. The then 25-year-old rapper was sitting in a BMW driven by Marion "Suge" Knight.

A white Cadillac drove next to the vehicle. Several shots were fired from the Cadillac. Tupac was hit four times. Knight was also injured, but survived the attack. Tupac died of his injuries six days later.

For decades, the murder went uncharged. It was not until 2023 that Duane Davis was arrested and charged with his alleged role in the crime.

Davis is said to have organized the attack

The prosecutor's office claimed in the trial that Davis organized the attack and procured a weapon for those involved. This is said to have been a retaliatory action.

Hours before the shooting, Tupac and people close to him had gotten into a physical altercation with Orlando "Baby Lane" Anderson, Davis' nephew, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

According to the prosecutor's office, this altercation led to Davis and other members of the South Side Compton Crips looking for Tupac. They are said to have finally taken the white Cadillac and carried out the attack.

Davis was not the shooter, according to the indictment

An important point of the case: Davis was not accused of shooting Tupac himself.

Rather, the prosecution argued that Davis had enabled the crime and provided the weapon. According to Nevada law, a person can be convicted of murder even if he or she does not fire the fatal shot himself, but is significantly involved in the crime.

Davis himself had stated in previous interviews that he was in the Cadillac and passed a gun to the other men in the vehicle. These statements became an important part of the indictment in the trial.

His own statements became central evidence

Davis himself had made over the years were particularly important.

These included statements from interviews and his book "Compton Street Legend", published in 2019. In it, Davis described his version of the events surrounding Tupac's death.

The defense, on the other hand, argued that Davis had partially fabricated or exaggerated his stories to get attention and sell his book. They also pointed out that there was no forensic evidence directly linking Davis to the Cadillac or the shootings.

However, the jury ultimately followed the prosecution's reasoning and found Davis guilty.

Why Tupac became a target in the first place

According to the prosecution, the attack was a result of the conflicts between rival groups in Compton at the time.

Tupac was closely associated with Death Row Records and the label-affiliated Mob Piru group at the time. Davis, on the other hand, belonged to the South Side Compton Crips.

The tensions between these groups also overlapped with the well-known rivalry between the hip-hop camps on the West and East Coasts, which included Death Row Records and Bad Boy Records, among others.

The guilty

verdict represents a crucial turning point, but it does not mean that the case is already finally closed. Davis has announced that he will appeal.

The sentence is scheduled to be announced on October 13, 2026. Davis faces life imprisonment.

The man who, according to the prosecution, fired the fatal shots was also never tried for the murder. Orlando Anderson, who was named as a possible shooter, died in 1998, and Davis is the only one of the four men who, according to the prosecution, were in the Cadillac, who is still alive.

A verdict of great significance for hip-hop history

The death of Tupac Shakur has been one of the most famous unsolved cases in music history for decades. His murder and the death of The Notorious B.I.G. a few months later had a lasting impact on the history of hip-hop.

With the guilty verdict against Duane "Keffe D" Davis, there is now a conviction in the Tupac Shakur murder case for the first time.
