Fatal Kenya Plane Crash Kills 11, Including Hungarian and German Tourists
A tragic light aircraft crash in Kenya on Tuesday resulted in the deaths of eleven people, including ten European tourists and the Kenyan pilot. The aircraft went down while en route to a popular safari destination, leaving officials and governments to investigate the cause.
The Incident and Casualties
The single-engine plane, operated by Mombasa Air Safari, was flying from the coastal resort town of Diani to the Maasai Mara reserve when it crashed around 08:30 local time (05:30 GMT). The wreckage was found in a forested area in Kwale County in Kenya's southeast.
The disaster claimed the lives of:
- Eight Hungarian tourists, including two entire families, one acquaintance, and two minors.
- Two German tourists.
- The Kenyan pilot.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto confirmed the deaths of the Hungarian nationals, stating next of kin would be notified once official identification was complete. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban also sent his condolences.
Investigation Underway
The Kenyan aviation authority confirmed the incident and immediately dispatched investigators to the site to determine the cause of the crash. The airline, Mombasa Air Safari, has stated it is fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation. The incident underscores the risks involved in light aircraft travel often used for transfers between Kenya's popular coastal and safari destinations.
