The SPD politician and former Federal Minister of Health Karl Lauterbach is taking on a new international task: He will become an honorary member of a new commission of the World Health Organization (WHO) that deals with the connection between climate and health. Parallel to his Bundestag mandate, Lauterbach says he wants to work on a report on the health consequences of climate change, reports Der Spiegel.

The body is to be officially founded next Wednesday in Reykjavik. The aim of the commission, Lauterbach told the German Press Agency, is "also to be able to present the health damage and consequences of climate change". Climate change is accelerating, but public interest is noticeably declining worldwide and also in Germany, said the SPD politician: "I believe that this will only change on the condition that we succeed in being able to present the health damage and consequences of climate change."

The Commission is not interested in scaremongering, Lauterbach continued: The goal is an increased awareness of the problem "and the perspective of a more carefree life by getting the situation under control".

Officially, the WHO is part of the United Nations. Its mission: to improve the health of all people worldwide. However, the reality is more complex. The majority of WHO funding does not come from member states, but from voluntary contributions that are allocated for specific purposes. Those who pay have a say – and that's what they do above all:

A significant part of the budget flows into programs that are in the interests of these donors. Health strategies are thus designed not only scientifically, but also politically and economically motivated.

It is striking that the WHO is increasingly involving former or even active politicians – as advisors, special representatives or members of committees. Whether former health ministers, government advisors or international diplomats, those who have been active in political power structures often find a new field of activity in the WHO.

Is this still about health – or is it already about global governance to the exclusion of democratic control?
