Child abuse in the Catholic Church: A global scandal that has not yet been dealt with
From the USA to Germany to France and Australia, the revelations about child sexual abuse in the Catholic Church have drawn like a dark shadow through the past decades. Billions in compensation have been paid, thousands of clergy have been accused and hundreds of thousands of victims have been registered – but the actual dimension is likely to be far greater.
395 million dollars in San Francisco: The church pays again
The Catholic Archdiocese of San Francisco agreed on a compensation payment of 395 million US dollars at the end of June 2026. More than 530 survivors of child sexual abuse are to be compensated with it. The archdiocese had already filed for bankruptcy in 2023 after a wave of lawsuits over decades-old abuse cases was received.
It is noteworthy that the agreement does not only provide for financial benefits. Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone undertakes to personally write a letter of apology to each person affected. In addition, a public list of accused clergy is to be published and confidentiality agreements with victims are to be waived in the future.
For many survivors, this is not primarily about money, but about acknowledging the injustice they have suffered and taking on institutional responsibility.
The number of victims of the last 40 years: A staggering balance
exact worldwide number does not exist. Most countries started independent investigations late, many files were destroyed or cases were never reported. Nevertheless, the available data paint a frightening picture:
France
In 2021, after two years of investigations, the independent Sauvé Commission concluded that around 330,000 children and adolescents had been victims of sexual violence within the Catholic Church since 1950. More than 3,000 suspected perpetrators have been identified, two-thirds of them priests.
The commission spoke of systemic failure and called for far-reaching reforms of canon law as well as comprehensive compensation for those affected.
Germany
The well-known MHG study of 2018 documented at least 3,677 victims and 1,670 accused clergy between 1946 and 2014. A recent ARD investigation from 2026 now assumes at least 6,529 verifiable victims and 2,848 suspects. However, experts consider the number of unreported cases to be considerably higher.
Several victims have now received compensation payments of up to 300,000 euros, but victims' associations continue to criticize what they consider to be insufficient processing and recognition of the suffering.
Australia's
state-run Royal Commission found that seven percent of all Catholic priests who worked between 1950 and 2010 were accused of child abuse.
In 2018, the Archbishop of Adelaide, Philip Wilson, was convicted of covering up abuse, making him the highest-ranking Catholic dignitary in the world to be found guilty of such an offence. Later, the verdict was overturned on appeal, but the case remained a symbol of the long-standing culture of silence and looking the other way within church structures.
United States
The USA is one of the countries with the most extensive legal process. The so-called Boston scandal in the early 2000s already brought systematic cover-ups to light.
Since then, numerous dioceses have filed for bankruptcy in order to deal with billions in compensation claims. The Archdiocese of Los Angeles alone paid a total of 880 million dollars to 1,353 victims in 2024 - one of the highest compensations in church history.
Hundreds of thousands of victims worldwide
If you add up the official figures from France, Germany, Australia, Ireland, the USA and other countries, there is already a documented number of several hundred thousand victims of sexual violence within Catholic institutions.
However, many scientists and victims' associations assume that the actual number is significantly higher. Shame, social pressure, statutes of limitations and the decades-long authority of the church have prevented many of those affected from making their experiences public.
The accusation: systematic cover-up
For many critics, it is not only the abuse itself that weighs particularly heavily, but also the way church institutions deal with the perpetrators.
Again and again it was documented that accused priests were transferred instead of reported. Internal investigations replaced state criminal proceedings, and those affected were sometimes forced to remain silent or not taken seriously.
Pope Francis tightened canon law in 2019 and obliged clergy worldwide to report cases of abuse and their cover-up to church authorities. Critics, however, complain that this does not mean an automatic obligation to report to state authorities and that control continues to take place largely within the church.
Between faith and responsibility
For millions of faithful Catholics worldwide, the abuse scandal represents a heavy burden. Many consciously distinguish between their faith and the behavior of individual clergymen or church officials.
Nevertheless, the question remains whether institutional structures have been sufficiently reformed to effectively protect future generations.
The billions in compensation, public apologies and new protection concepts show that the church is taking on more responsibility today than it did a few decades ago. For many victims, however, these steps come late – too late to undo lost childhoods, destroyed trust and lifelong trauma.
The reappraisal of one of the biggest abuse scandals in modern history is therefore far from complete.
