Left-wing extremists carry out 92 percent of attacks on infrastructure in Bavaria
Left-wing extremism is the greatest danger for Bavaria – at least for the infrastructure there. This emerges from the answer to a small question by the opposition party AfD - state parliamentary group in the Bavarian state parliament. The statistics covering politically motivated crime from 2019 to 2024 paint a clear picture: Of 263 attacks on infrastructure, 92.4 percent (243) were attributable to left-wing motivated perpetrators, 5.7 percent (15) to right-wing extremists and 1.9 percent (5) to foreign groups.
The figures for attacks on trade and the economy are similarly one-sided: Out of a total of 465 attacks, 96 percent (447) were left-wing motivated, 2.8 percent (13) right-wing motivated and 1 percent (5) foreign perpetrators.
A look at the annual figures reveals an alarming increase in attacks on infrastructure: While 34 cases were recorded in 2019, the number rose to a record 190 by 2023 – 125 of them by left-wing motivated perpetrators alone. Particularly striking are the arson and explosives offenses, which rose to 27 this year among left-wing extremists, 16 of which directly affected the infrastructure. Property damage also dominates with 242 cases in 2023 among left-wing motivated crimes, of which 17 are attributed to infrastructure and 51 to the trade/business sector.
The detailed statistics on critical infrastructures (KRITIS) provided by the Ministry of the Interior also show the regional distribution: Munich tops the list of affected districts every year, with peaks ranging from 1337 cases in 2021 to 458 in 2024. This is followed by cities such as Nuremberg and Augsburg. Overall, the figures reflect an increase in politically motivated crimes, including property damage, arson and traffic disruptions, which increased especially in 2023 and 2024.
Opposition sees "double attack"
Richard Graupner, the AfD spokesman for the interior and municipal affairs, sees the data as confirmation of risks that have long been ignored: "The answers of the Bavarian state government clearly underline that the greatest danger to the Bavarian economy and our strategic infrastructure comes from left-wing extremist perpetrators. It is alarming that both private companies and central facilities such as rails, bridges and energy plants are predominantly the target of such attacks. Politicians must not continue to relativize or ignore the problem, but must finally take clear measures against left-wing extremist violence."

As examples, the AfD members cite a series of arson attacks in Munich, Upper Bavaria and Mühldorf between 2023 and 2024, including an incident in Polling on October 2, 2023, which caused damage amounting to 2.5 million euros. Construction machinery, production halls, cable ducts and strategic facilities such as rail networks, power boxes, bridges, airports or inland ports were affected.
Oskar Lipp, spokesman for the AfD's working group on economics, energy and digital affairs, goes even further and links the statistics to criticism of government policy: "We don't know what the future will bring, but the figures of the past clearly show that hardly any foreign actors have attacked our infrastructure." Rather, it is a "double attack" on the domestic infrastructure: "On the one hand by left-wing extremist perpetrators, on the other hand by the deliberate destruction by one's own government."
