Netflix acquires Warner Bros. film and streaming business for $72 billion

Netflix acquires Warner Bros. film and streaming business for $72 billion

Netflix announced on Friday that it would take over the film, TV and streaming businesses of Warner Bros Discovery - for a massive 72 billion dollars
This would put the world's largest streaming provider under control of one of Hollywood's most traditional studios.
The conclusion was preceded by a fierce bidding battle. Netflix offered almost $28 per share, well ahead of Paramount Skydance, which had offered around $24. The acquisition would give Netflix access to some of the industry's most valuable brands — including Game of Thrones, DC Comics, and Harry Potter. This shifts the balance of power in Hollywood even more in favor of Netflix, which has so far become the leading platform without major acquisitions.
Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos said that together the two companies would "shape the next century of storytelling". The markets reacted mixed: Warner shares gained almost 4.4%, while Netflix fell by around 3%.
At the same time, this merger is expected to come under massive scrutiny in the US and Europe. Netflix would swallow a direct competitor that itself operates around 130 million subscribers and the streaming service HBO Max. Criticism comes from politicians, industry associations and former executives: They fear less competition, higher prices and disadvantages for cinemas worldwide.
Netflix, on the other hand, emphasizes that customers would receive more content, cheaper package prices and more productions "Made in the USA" through the merger. The release of Warner films in cinemas is also to be continued.
The deal is expected to close in Q3 2026 at the earliest, following a spin-off from Discovery Global. Netflix then expects annual savings of 2 to 3 billion dollars.

Background to the acquisition: Netflix wants to secure long-term rights, reduce dependencies on external studios and strengthen growth areas such as gaming. Warner Bros has already proven with titles like Hogwarts Legacy that this area has billions in potential.

🔮 Assessment: What does this mean for the market, industry and people?

Now very clearly and without whitewashing – this is how it will work:
1. The streaming market is finally becoming an oligopoly
Disney
, Amazon and Netflix are already dominating today.
With Warner under Netflix, another major player is gone.
➡️ Less choice of real alternatives
➡️ More power in pricing
Higher subscription costs likely

2. Hollywood is losing diversity
Warner Bros is one of the oldest film studios in the world.
 A merger with Netflix means:
  • Less independent content
  • ,
  • more algorithmically optimized productions,
  • less risk for exceptional films
  • Focus on global mass hits
➡️ Creative diversity is getting tighter – the industry is becoming formulaic.

3. Cinema industry under pressure
Cinemas around the world are already weakened.
If Netflix owns a studio, Netflix decides:
  • which films come to the cinema
  • ,
  • how long they run there
  • , whether cinema is still worthwhile
➡️ at all Cinemas will continue to lose importance – especially smaller houses.

4. For customers: more content, but less freedom
Positive in the short term:
✔️ huge library on one platform
✔️ well-known brands under one roof
 ✔️ probably new "bundle" prices
But in the medium term:
❗ less competition = declining quality
❗ Prices rise after the consolidation phase❗
Content disappears faster behind paywalls

5. For creatives: opportunity and risk at the same time
More productions mean:
more jobs
 ✔️, ✔️ more international reach
 ✔️, higher budgets
But:
❗ Netflix dictates the rules
❗ of the game less creative freedom
❗ Focus on secure franchise productions instead of innovation

6. Social: Media power continues to concentrate:
If a single corporation
  • decides what is produced,
  • how stories are told
  • ,
  • what topics are disseminated globally
... then a cultural center of power emerges that can influence opinions and narratives more strongly.

➡️ Cultural control by a few global tech giants is being strengthened.

🚀 What will have the greatest impact on people?

Short term:
  • More comfort (all in one place).
  • Cheaper bundles.
Medium-term:
  • Subscription prices are rising.
  • Productions are becoming more uniform.
  • Cinema is losing relevance.
Long-term:
  • A few mega-corporations control the global narrative culture.
  • Creatives who don't fit the mold lose platforms.
  • Viewers are being pushed more towards mainstream content.
