Schlager singer Howard Carpendale: "Not everyone is right-wing just because they have justified fears"
Howard Carpendale cannot be clearly classified politically. In an interview with the Neue Zürcher Zeitung (NZZ), he emphasizes that he considers Donald Trump a danger and is concerned about democratic developments in the USA. He also points to the noticeable shift to the right in many countries.
But as soon as the topic comes to Germany, he is much more critical:
Carpendale's impression is that the concerns of many people in Germany are not taken seriously. Issues such as migration, the rising cost of living and a lack of a sense of political leadership would unsettle the population. In his view, many responsible persons have forgotten that their task is to serve and protect the citizens.

He does not want to name names or parties. Carpendale explains that he does not think in the usual "right-left" pigeonholes. People are not automatically "right-wing" just because they express legitimate fears. The NZZ classifies his statements in such a way that they are vaguely worded – similar to a hit lyric that leaves a lot open and thus has a broad effect.
As far as the US is concerned, Carpendale remains clear:
he considers Trump dangerous, and the passivity of many Americans towards his authoritarian appearance leaves him stunned.

In view of global tensions, political division, worldwide conflicts and the climate crisis, he is finding it increasingly difficult to have confidence in the development of the world.
