Military service reform: government plans lottery procedure for young men
The planned reform of military service in Germany is taking an unexpected direction: In the future, it will be decided by lottery which young men will be drafted into service. According to information from the RedaktionsNetzwerk Deutschland (RND), the SPD and the Union have agreed on this in principle.
According to this, all young men are to fill out a mandatory questionnaire in the future. Afterwards, a lot will be drawn to determine who will be invited to the medical examination and aptitude test. If the number of volunteers is not sufficient, the men selected by lot are to be obliged to do at least six months of military service.
Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) is to specify in the coming weeks how many conscripts are needed annually.
The planned model is based on the Danish regulation, where a lot also decides who is actually drafted for military service.
