Who is responsible for the current crisis in the Middle East? A critical classification

Who is responsible for the current crisis in the Middle East? A critical classification

The geopolitical situation in the Middle East has deteriorated significantly in recent months. Military escalations, economic upheavals and increasing tensions between global actors characterize the picture. In the public and political debate – both in Europe and internationally – the question is increasingly being asked: Who bears responsibility for this development?

A growing number of voices see the main responsibility with the United States and Israel. This assessment is based on a series of decisions and military actions that, according to critics, contributed to the escalation.

Military strategies and geopolitical interests

The US has been pursuing an active role in the Middle East for decades, shaped by security interests, energy policy and strategic alliances. The close partnership with Israel is considered a central pillar of American foreign policy in the region.

Critics argue that this support – especially in military and political terms – helps to exacerbate existing conflicts instead of defusing them. Decisions made from Washington have a direct impact on regional dynamics and can intensify spirals of escalation.

Israel, on the other hand, sees itself in a permanent threat situation and often justifies military operations with the right to self-defense. At the same time, international observers accuse the Israeli government of further destabilizing the situation through its actions in the Gaza Strip and other Palestinian territories.

Allegations of war crimes and international criticism
The
repeated accusations that Israel has violated international law in the Gaza Strip are particularly explosive. Organizations such as the United Nations and various human rights groups have repeatedly raised the issue of possible war crimes. These include:
  •  Attacks on civilian infrastructure
  •  High casualties among the civilian population
  •  Restriction of humanitarian aid
In addition, there have been reports and official statements according to which facilities or units related to UN structures are also said to have been affected. Such incidents cause considerable international criticism and raise questions about the proportionality of military measures.

Israel regularly rejects these accusations or argues that militant groups use civilian facilities as a shield – a circumstance that complicates the operational situation considerably.

European perspective: Between criticism and dependence

Within Europe, scepticism towards the previous line is growing. While some governments continue to emphasize clear support for Israel and the transatlantic partnership with the US, more critical voices are growing louder at the same time.

Above all, economic consequences – such as rising energy prices, interrupted supply chains and risks for aviation and trade – mean that the effects of the crisis are increasingly being felt directly in Europe. In this context, the question of co-responsibility is discussed not only morally, but also economically.

Complexity instead of simple blame
As

understandable as the criticism of individual actors is, a one-sided apportionment of blame falls short. The reality is much more complex. The Middle East conflict is deeply rooted in history and shaped by a variety of regional and international interests.

In addition to the US and Israel, other factors also play a role:
  •  Regional power struggles, for example with Iran
  •  Activities of non-state actors such as militias and terrorist organisations
  •  Historical lines of conflict and unresolved territorial issues
This mixed situation makes it difficult to define clear responsibilities.

Conclusion:
"The current crisis is the result of a multitude of decisions, interests and historical developments. The role of the US and Israel is increasingly being critically questioned – especially with regard to military strategies and their consequences for the civilian population.
At the same time, it is clear that simple accusations do not do justice to the complexity of the situation. What is clear, however, is that without a rethink in international politics and serious diplomatic efforts, the situation will continue to deteriorate – with significant consequences not only for the Middle East, but also for Europe and global stability."
