Disappointing Disney remake: "Snow White" puts you to sleep instead of inspiring
The remake of "Snow White" is causing discussion - not because of the film itself, but because of the excitement in the run-up. Even before filming began, it was clear: the famous seven dwarfs will hardly appear at all, if at all, and the most famous song of the original will also be missing.
Despite all the assumptions that the film is particularly modern or "woke", the result is more boring than provocative. Many awaited the film not with anticipation, but to criticize it – which is less due to the content than to the clumsy public relations.
The first
wave of criticism came when actor Peter Dinklage (known from "Game of Thrones") made negative comments about the portrayal of the dwarfs. He called them "backward", to which Disney reacted immediately and announced that it would fundamentally revise the characters. This was a setback for many dwarf actors in Hollywood, as they rarely get leading roles anyway and were thus deprived of one of the few chances.
Shortly
afterwards, lead actress Rachel Zegler came under criticism for publicly speaking out in favor of a "free Palestine" – statements that some interpreted as anti-Semitic. Her colleague Gal Gadot (the evil queen in the film and herself Israeli) reacted publicly and clearly.

The film itself
In terms of content, "Snow White" remains quite close to the well-known fairy tale: A king's daughter flees from the evil stepmother, lives with strange forest creatures (no longer "dwarfs") and falls into a deep sleep due to a poisoned apple, from which she is redeemed by a kiss. The story offers little plot – so the film would have to convince with other elements: music, dance, humor or charisma of the characters.
Lack of charm
Unfortunately, this is exactly what is missing. Rachel Zegler seems expressionless in her role, Gal Gadot drowns in her costumes, and the prince – a bandit instead of a nobleman – also remains pale. Even the music is disappointing: New songs like "Waiting On a Wish" are more reminiscent of background music in a department store than of big musical numbers. Classics like "Someday My Prince Will Come" were omitted – probably for fear of political criticism.
The choreography seems unimaginative, although the same choreographer has already proven with "La La Land" that she can do better.
humour? Nothing.
The film also doesn't score points in terms of humor. The so-called "magical creatures" seem animated and out of place, their dialogues flat. In an exclusive screening in Berlin, there was an embarrassing silence where laughter would have been expected. Instead, there are many moral speeches about social justice and redistribution – so exaggerated that even committed leftists could switch off at some point.
Unfortunately, a few cute little animals don't save anything either.
Conclusion If "woke" really comes from "awake", then "Snow White" is the opposite: a soporific experience – meant harmlessly, but implemented uninspired. Neither exciting,
nor charming – simply superfluous.
