On April 28, 2025, Spain experienced one of the most serious power outages in its history. MFRadio.de reporter Valerie was in Granada at the time and describes her personal impressions of this extraordinary event.

Valerie was in a café in the heart of Granada when suddenly the Wi-Fi failed. At first, she thought it was a local problem, but soon it turned out that the coffee machine also had no more electricity. In the surrounding shops and offices, there was similar perplexity. People gathered in the streets, exchanged information and tried to find out what had happened.

As darkness fell, the situation became surreal. Without street lighting and functioning traffic lights, the city was shrouded in darkness. Nevertheless, the atmosphere remained remarkably calm. Neighbors got together, cooked together on gas stoves and shared food. On the forecourt of the cathedral, people gathered, sang and enjoyed the clear starry sky – a rare spectacle in the otherwise light-flooded city.

The causes of the blackout

The exact cause of the power outage is still the subject of investigations. According to initial reports, there was a sudden frequency deviation in the power grid, which led to automatic shutdowns. Some experts suspect that the high feed-in of solar energy combined with insufficient grid stability may have played a role. Others consider a technical defect or a chain of unfortunate circumstances to be more likely.

The incident in Spain raises the question of how vulnerable other European countries are to similar events.
