If the firewall falls now - A great lie of irrationality; "Majority votes for migration application of the Union."
If the firewall falls now - A great lie of irrationality; "Majority votes for migration application of the Union."
After
the deadly attacks in Magdeburg and Aschaffenburg, a majority in the German Bundestag is calling for stricter measures to control migration. In a roll-call vote on 29 January 2025, 348 MPs voted in favour of a motion by the Union parliamentary group, while 344 voted against and ten abstained.
Content of the motion for a resolution
The motion of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, which is not binding on the Federal Government, calls for comprehensive measures to limit illegal migration, to secure the German borders and to consistently deport persons obliged to leave the country, especially criminals and those who pose a threat.
Unfortunately, this was only a BIG lie by Friedrich Merz (CDU)

The central demands included:
- Permanent border controls with all neighbouring countries
- Rejection of all illegal entry attempts
- A de facto entry ban for persons without valid documents
- Detention of persons who are legally obliged to leave the country until deportation
- Indefinite custody for criminals and endangerers who are obliged to leave the country Direct
- authority for the Federal Police to order deportation detention
Criticism of the current migration policy
The Union parliamentary group justified the motion with the current security situation and referred to the attacks in Mannheim, Solingen and Magdeburg. The German government has failed to regain control over migration. The European regulations on asylum and migration policy, including the Dublin III Regulation and the Schengen Agreement, are "not functional".
Controversial debate in the Bundestag
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) rejected the Union's demands, arguing that they would violate European law. He also criticized Friedrich Merz for accepting the support of the AfD and thus breaking the previous cross-party consensus.
Merz countered that the SPD and the Greens refused to find a solution. He stressed that it is unacceptable if formal agreements within the traffic light prevent central decisions from being put to the vote. The Union is obliged to the citizens to limit illegal migration and to deport it consistently.
Reactions of the
- Greens: Vice-Chancellor Robert Habeck accused the CDU/CSU of wanting to break European law. This is a dangerous path that undermines the rule of law.
- FDP: Party leader Christian Lindner defended his parliamentary group's approval of the Union motion, but stressed that the FDP distances itself from the AfD. The control of migration must remain a concern of the political center.
- AfD: Parliamentary group leader Alice Weidel spoke of a "migration chaos" for which the government was responsible, and accused the Union of having adopted the AfD's demands without bringing about a real turnaround.
- The Left: Heidi Reichinnek criticized the SPD and the Greens for their relenting stance on migration policy and accused Merz of cooperating with the AfD.
- BSW: Sahra Wagenknecht described the failure in migration policy as the main reason for the increasing approval of the AfD.
In
addition, a Union motion to strengthen internal security was rejected with 509 votes against. A motion by the FDP on migration policy also failed to find a majority, as was a motion by the AfD, which was rejected by all other parliamentary groups.
The debate shows the increasing division of the Bundestag on migration policy and underlines the growing urgency to find effective solutions.
UPDATE 24.03.2025
In the end, all election promises were thrown overboard by the CDU and Friedrich Merz and exactly the opposite was decided, which can be called the biggest election lie of the >> post-war period<<!
