Horrific car attack in Mannheim: Arrest warrant issued against fatal driver

An arrest warrant has been issued against the driver who caused the death of the man in Mannheim on suspicion of double murder and multiple counts of attempted murder.

This was announced by the Mannheim public prosecutor's office and the Baden-Württemberg State Criminal Police Office.

In Mannheim city center, a man deliberately drove a car into a crowd. According to consistent media reports, at least two people were killed and several others were seriously injured. A suspect was arrested. According to MFRadio.de information, the driver who caused the fatal accident in Mannheim was Alexander S., a German citizen.

The police say there was a single perpetrator, but there are no indications of a second perpetrator. No information can be given yet on the number and severity of the injuries.

Alexander S. is lying seriously injured in the Mannheim University Hospital. As Welt reports, he is said to have fired a blank gun into his mouth during his arrest and suffered life-threatening injuries. He is a German citizen, 40 years old and comes from Rhineland-Palatinate. This was reported to the dpa by the Baden-Württemberg Interior Minister Thomas Strobl (CDU).

According to SWR , 40-year-old Alexander S. comes from Baden-Württemberg, but most recently lived in Ludwigshafen (Rhineland-Palatinate). German security authorities have not yet noticed him in connection with extremism or terrorism. However, he is said to have had mental health issues in the past.

Welt , however, reports, citing security sources, that the owner of the Ford Fiesta used in the attack had been noticed in one case for showing unconstitutional and terrorist organizations. In August of last year, he is said to have admitted himself to hospital. He is said to have said that he wanted to pour a can of gasoline over himself and then set himself on fire.

According to Welt information, the dead are a man aged around 50 and a woman. According to Bild , at least 14 people were injured. After the incident, the Mannheim University Hospital said it had prepared everything for a "possible mass influx of injured people". Three patients who were classified as having a high medical urgency are currently receiving acute medical care. They are two adults and a child.
