The Silberberg: An All-Season Adventure Mountain in Bodenmais
The Silberberg, Bodenmais's local mountain (Hausberg), stands at 955 meters (3,133 feet) and is recognized as one of the most popular family recreational destinations in the entire Bavarian Forest. Offering a wealth of activities across all seasons, the mountain ensures an unforgettable experience for visitors of all ages.
The mountain is easily accessible, and guests staying in Bodenmais can use the local hiking or ski bus to reach the mountain free of charge.
Year-Round Thrills: The Silberberg-Coaster
A major recent addition to the mountain's attractions is the Silberberg-Coaster, an all-weather alpine coaster that opened on July 6, 2025. Built on a rail-guided system, it offers a rollercoaster-like descent regardless of the weather, allowing for year-round fun in both summer and winter.
The ride features a 450-meter ascent followed by a rapid 780-meter descent, which includes two adventurous circles and a winding passage through the treetops, guaranteeing an adrenaline rush. The previous 600-meter Summer Toboggan Run remains in operation, ensuring double the excitement on the local mountain.
During the warmer months, the Silberberg transforms into a comprehensive nature and adventure park:
- Tobogganing: Visitors can still race down the original 600-meter Summer Toboggan Run with speeds suitable for all ages.
- Family Activities: The summit and surrounding areas feature a Children's Climbing Garden, exciting adventure playgrounds, a forest ball run (Waldkugelbahn), and an Archery Course.
- Accessibility & Hiking: The chairlift provides comfortable access to the summit for breathtaking views, sunrises, and sunset drinks at the on-site dining spots like Herberts Bar, the Silberberg-Alm, or the Bergmann-Schänke. The peak can also be reached via leisurely or challenging hikes.
In winter, the Silberberg is an ideal, family-friendly ski area, particularly well-suited for beginners:
- Children's Ski Park: The dedicated Kinder-Skipark offers the perfect environment for small skiers to practice their first attempts, supported by a magic carpet, a ski carousel, and a separate children's lift, making learning stress-free.
- Slopes: Alpine skiers and snowboarders will also find suitable runs for their enjoyment.
- Sledding: A fast toboggan run (Schlittenbahn) runs from the middle station to the valley station, promising plenty of fun.
- Exploration: The mountain can be explored on foot, ideally with snowshoes, to enjoy the stunning winter landscape and catch a winter sunset from the summit.
Deep within the Mountain: The Historic Visitor Mine
A major highlight of any visit is the guided tour deep into the Historic Visitor Mine (Besucherbergwerk) inside the Silberberg, allowing guests to walk in the footsteps of the region's mining history.
Equipped with a helmet and a coat, visitors are led through the over 600-meter-long Barbarastollen (St. Barbara Tunnel) and deep into the mountain to a massive cavity known as the Großer Barbaraverhau. The tour features impressive displays of old mining machinery in operation, along with engaging stories and myths from the mountain's rich past.
