Carnival events in Limassol postponed on Saturday, funerals held for fire victims
The municipality of Limassol has postponed all carnival events planned for Saturday to accommodate the funeral of the five family members who died in a fire in the Ayios Nikolas area last Saturday, it said on Tuesday.
The fire in Limassol was reported at around 4am on Saturday and within minutes four fire engines were on the scene. The family's house was on the second floor and the fire spread quickly, trapping the family inside .
Bassem Adeeb Gamil Takla, 35, and his wife Maria Georgiou, 33, and their three children, aged seven, three and two, died. The two eldest children were girls and the youngest a boy.
The municipality of Limassol announced on Monday that it would fully cover the funeral costs of all five victims and expressed its "deepest sadness" over the incident .
Temporary accommodation has already been secured for the other residents of the building, it said.
The tragedy raised the question of why there are so many low-quality household appliances, adapter plugs and extension cables and to what extent their import is sufficiently regulated.
