A serious accident on the Nicosia-Limassol highway brought traffic to a standstill on Monday afternoon after a tanker truck caught fire following a collision with another heavy truck. The motorway remains closed in both directions.

The accident occurred around noon near the Skarinou exit, according to emergency services and eyewitnesses.

The impact led to a complete road closure, with all lanes closed. One of the trucks, a tanker truck with fuel, caught fire, while the other, a semi-trailer with hay bales, overturned on the side of the road.

The fire brigade and police rushed to the scene of the accident. Emergency services are working to extinguish the fire, while police are directing traffic and diverting vehicles to alternative routes.

A police helicopter was used to drop water on the burning tanker and prevent the flames from spreading to nearby trees.

Motorists were asked to follow the instructions of the police and use the old road as a diversion.
