Driving student arrested for speeding on the highway

An 18-year-old learner driver was caught speeding at 185 km/h on the Nicosia-Larnaca motorway on Sunday evening, traffic police said on Monday.

He was stopped during a routine check on the highway at 12:30 am on Monday morning.

Driving students are prohibited from driving on the motorway unless they are accompanied by a driving instructor.

After he was stopped, the police conducted a drug test, which came back positive.

The 18-year-old was taken to Aradippou police station for further investigation and is due to appear before Larnaca District Court later on Monday.

More than 2,815 traffic violations were recorded during island-wide traffic checks in the week leading up to Sunday, of which 987 were related to speeding , 185 to using a mobile phone while driving and 163 to not wearing a seatbelt.

Other violations included drink driving, illegal parking and not wearing a helmet while riding a motorcycle . In addition, 26 seizures of illegal substances, 40 car seizures and 14 two-wheeler seizures were recorded.
