Afghan kills toddler and passerby with knife

Horror in Aschaffenburg! On Wednesday, an Afghan man attacked small children in a daycare group with a kitchen knife in Schöntal Park. According to the police, two people were killed. Among the dead is a two-year-old Moroccan boy who was killed by multiple stab wounds. A second child, a Syrian girl (2), had the knife stabbed three times in the neck, but luckily survived the attack.

A 41-year-old passerby bravely intervened. He was also fatally injured. According to Judith Gerlach, State Minister for Health and Care, a 61-year-old man was taken to the hospital with several stab wounds in his upper body. He is no longer in danger of dying. A teacher who broke her forearm in the attack was also treated in the hospital. According to the NIUS, the teachers and children are from the St. Agatha kindergarten.
According to the Lower Franconia police, the arrested man is a 28-year-old Afghan. According to Spiegel, the arrested man is called Enamullah O. and lives in an asylum accommodation.

Bavaria's Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann spoke to the press at the scene in the late afternoon. He gave information about the killer's background. According to him, the Afghan was already known to the police for three violent crimes. He was admitted to a psychiatric hospital three times and released three times.

The immigration story of the child killer:

The Afghan entered Germany on November 19, 2022 and applied for asylum in early 2023. Then there was a Dublin procedure, which, according to Herrmann, "was not completed in time." After that, there was a normal asylum procedure.

According to Herrmann, the killer announced his intention to voluntarily leave the country on December 4, 2024, also in writing. He explained that he wanted to take care of the paperwork at the Afghan consulate.

A week later, the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) closed the asylum procedure and ordered the Afghan to leave the country. On December 9, he was assigned a carer appointed by the district court.

Regarding the motive, Herrmann said: "At the moment, the suspicion is that he was mentally ill." An examination of his rooms in the asylum accommodation did not provide any evidence of radical, Islamist views. Medication was found there.

The police on X: "According to the current situation, a knife attack took place at around 11:45 a.m. in Schöntal Park, in which two people were fatally injured. The suspect was arrested in the immediate vicinity of the crime scene." An eyewitness reported to the Main-Echo that the man was taken away "in a headlock." The suspected weapon used in the crime, a knife, was confiscated.

According to a police spokesman, the crime occurred in a park in the Lower Franconian city near the state border with Hesse.
According to current information, there was apparently no relationship between the perpetrator and the victim. According to Main-Echo, neither of the two teachers knew the attacker or recognized him as a possible father of one of the children.

Several police officers are said to be receiving psychological counseling. According to Main-Echo, Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann is on his way to Aschaffenburg.

According to the police, the crime scene is Schöntal Park, which is located southeast of Aschaffenburg Central Station.

Because a suspect is said to have attempted to escape via railway tracks, rail traffic in Aschaffenburg has been suspended. According to the railway, trains to and from Aschaffenburg are currently being held back. It was not initially possible to predict how great the impact on regional and long-distance traffic would be.

Park is considered a "dangerous place"

It was only in November 2024 that the park in Aschaffenburg was classified as a "dangerous place" after a stabbing and an increase in drug offenses - the only one in the city and district of Aschaffenburg. With this classification, the police can check people without any specific suspicion. In October 2024, there was a major drug raid. The officers checked around 20 people, established their identities and carried out searches. During the checks, two obvious drug bunkers were discovered and narcotics were seized.

The Aschaffenburg criminal police have taken over the investigation into the events and possible background and are continuing this in close coordination with the public prosecutor's office. The investigators are asking:

Who made observations about what was happening in Schöntal Park at the relevant time?
Who else can provide relevant information related to the crime?

Witnesses can contact the police on 06021-857-1733. The police have also set up a video portal for witnesses .

"It cannot go on like this"

"Thoughts are with the victims"

“Deeply shocked”This is how Julia Klöckner reacts:

The urgent question is when policy measures will be taken to curb uncontrolled immigration. In particular, steps should be taken to:
  1. to consistently deport dangerous individuals and criminals who have entered the country with asylum status, and
  2. to prevent illegal entry through effective border controls.
The population expects politicians to make responsible decisions to both ensure the security of society and strengthen trust in the integrity of the asylum system.
